BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Power drills are one of the conventional tool types that are often found in any industrial workshops or even in the household. They are common tools for sheet metal fabrications or repairs, woodworking, and electrical and general household applications. The applications of power drills start from affixing fasteners to cutting sheet metals.

Before power drills come into the market the drills used are powered manually by operator force. In order to operate them, the force was applied axially on the drill and it was a kind of hectic task for tool users. They are even used for drilling metal types and yet not effective as power drill types. The efficient drilling tool for large-scale productions was made more complicated those days.

The traditional tool types used in past include tools such as Eggbeater hand drill, Breast drill, brace drill, crank drill, etc. It’s rare to find these with the high-tech tools in the market now.

On the other hand, the evolution of power drill types made it more efficient and no need to apply force manually as they are operating either electrical or pneumatic sources. Nowadays these tools are equipped with customized accessories that enable them to use as versatile tools in many engineering applications.

POWER DRILLS TYPES

Currently, different power drill types in the market are customized per application in different industries. But generally, all the power drills are falling under one of these types mentioned below.

  • Standard Electric Drills
  • Pneumatic Drills.
  • Heavy Duty Drills.

STANDARD ELECTRIC DRILLS

These are multitasking tools that are falling under power drills with high portability and easy handling. They do not need physical exertion to operate like traditional drills. Standard Drills are divided into cordless and corded types depending on the power source. The corded types need to plug into an electrical supply unit and it does limit the distance but you can use an extension for quite a distance use. When it comes to working for long periods or with higher power requirements corded types are the best ones. The most standard drill types are in the range of 500-1000 wattage and if the wattage is higher, it works less compared to other ones.

The cordless is portable and powered by batteries. The battery types used for cordless drill types are NiCad, NiMH, and Li-Ion.  Normally Li-Ion Batteries give more power and endurance than prevailing NiCad and NiMH batteries used in battery-powered drills. The cordless drills are rated by voltage and the above batteries include 9.6 to 16v volts generally.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE “PERFECT” POWER DRILL

We have discussed typical power drill types that are used in engineering applications and their accessories. So, let’s discuss how to choose the perfect power drill which suits your industrial needs. When you are buying a power drill first thing you need to consider is the type of the drill and application. You need to have a clear idea of choosing the drill type that will suit your application. Get yourself familiarized with your tasks and the type of drill you need.

Consider drill wattage, voltage, and battery endurance mainly. If your tasks need a continuous high-end drill type choose one of the heavy-duty drills. Move into corded ones unless you need more powerful and higher speeds, otherwise choose a portable hand drill. Portable drills give you a multi-tasking capability that can switch into various applications. When choosing a portable power drill try to buy one with a Li-Ion battery as it has high endurance and lifetime. A voltage of 16-32 volts would be ideal for the professional user.

The ideal speed of a drill bit depends upon the size of the bit and the material being drilled. Generally larger bits need to turn slower than smaller bits otherwise they may overheat and lose the quality of the drilling. Choose a power drill that can adjust the speed, and torque to working levels, and go for a corded drill if you need high-speed drilling. Generally, when larger chuck sizes are equipped with a larger motor. If you affix larger tools go for a larger chuck drill tool. The common chuck sizes are 3/8 & ½ inches and some chuck types need keys to adjust with bit sizes. So, it is good to have a keyless chuck otherwise you will need extra time to fix the bits.

It is a wise decision to choose a cordless power drill with the above features for general engineering applications. The cordless drills give handiness, portability, safety, and dual batteries. But it has these drawbacks like a higher price, prone to defects. So, it is your choice as the operator to choose the perfect one out of dozens of varieties of drilling tools.

FINAL TALK

As per the above discussion, you will now have a brief understanding of general and professional types of power drills and their accessories. Always keep in mind to buy a tool type for your professional tasks which are recommended by your industrial standards. Unless it will affect your workmanship of the end task.

It has proven over time the effectiveness of using them for various professional applications. Their simplicity, cost and time effectiveness, and multi-tasking abilities replace the conventional tools to aside. Let’s discuss more on 5 high-tech tools used by professional technicians and how are their impact on your industrial applications.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZQZlsEtBfn/?utm_medium=copy_link

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

High tech tools are often implemented in many industrial applications like Construction, Automobile, aviation, etc. When compare with Engineering applications, high-tech tools provide a lot of benefits to the operator even though they are costlier than conventional tools.

The pros of using high tech tools are,

  • High-quality output – limit the defect percentage and human errors,
  • Efficient and productive – increase productivity and reduce Downtime,
  • simplicity and remote – easy handling and portability,

Apart from that these tools are efficient in large-scale applications that save time and increase the output. The major drawbacks are high cost, consuming a considerable amount of power, and maintenance cost which is only applicable for some tools.

Various unique high-tech gadgets make easier your Engineering applications. Let’s discuss the top 5 of them briefly.

HIGH TECH TOOLS

The following types of high-tech tools are commonly used in welding, sheet metal, and soldering applications.

WELDER (WELDING MACHINE)

Welding machines (Welder) are the primary tool type that is used in all arc welding processes. It outputs adequate power (either AC or DC) to the welding electrode thus providing the best welding arc characteristics with maximum efficiency. It is necessary to choose the best welder for your welding applications unless the quality welded part cannot be obtained.

The welder types are found in either DC or AC power output. Normally AC power is used for higher temperature ranges, position welding, and mainly aluminum welding. The welding quality of AC types is not optimal as the delivery of heat varies with current variations. These AC machines are widely used as it is cost-effective and do better welding at positions or points. On the other hand, DC machines give you a smooth welding experience as they give a constant current allowing you to have homogeneous chords with high welding stability. Not only that DC machines provide you the adaptability in different welding processes such as TIG or Argon. When buying a welding machine, it is always good to go with DC comparing the above discussion.

The output of welding machines normally ranges from 5-1500 ampere and volts 10-40. Based on power output type, polarity, and function the welding machines are classified into different types such as Welding Transformer (AC type), Welding thyristor, Welding rectifier, Converter, Welding analog power supply, etc. Apart from analog controls nowadays you can find digitally-driven machines that will ease switching into parameters like current, voltage, arc length, type of current, and pulse current output.

When choosing a welder, you should consider these factors. At first, you should decide what processes you are capable of. That means if you are a beginner, you should probably go for the MIG welder type and if you are a professional welder your best choice would be the high-tech TIG welder type. TIG welding machines are quite used in the aviation and automobile industry where thin metal welding is prevalent. As discussed above DC power welders are the ones you should consider for a long-time business and always used the quality products which are recommended by your industry requirements.

Normally in the aviation Industry welding is considered one of three repair procedures where the metal can be joined without fasteners. The welding machines need to be selected to satisfy the requirements for the type of welding being undertaken. Apart from that, the welder who has been trained in welding processes for each metal needs to use the welding equipment manufacturers’ information to decide the equipment good to go for the welding.

Here are the welding machines types which are often available in the online market that can be recommended based on the above for professional welding applications.

1. INVERTER TYPE ARC ELECTRIC WELDING MACHINE

CNC PLASMA CUTTER

A plasma cutter is a high-tech cutting tool that is used to cut metals by using an ionized jet of gas. They are often used in light and heavy industries wherever quick, accurate, and precise cuts of flat, pliable metal are needed. Normal inside of a cutter high voltage electrode rapidly heats a compound gas mixture to a higher temperature when starting. The gas mixture includes shielding gas which is used as a propellant and redirects the jet to the desired point in the metal. Plasma can be safely used with most non-ferrous metals and commonly Steel, Aluminum, Copper, and Brass. Plasma cutters can be found attached to portable kits, fixed stations, and robotic arms and programmed (CNC) to the desired pattern of cutting. There are two types handheld and Mechanized plasma. The key difference is that mechanized plasma machines use a specific torch setup attached to a machine that is controlled automatically by CNC. For industrial high-end use most probably, a mechanized machine is preferable.

Pros of this product over-handled plasma tools are versatility, Fast and precise cut, efficiency and safety ensured due to automation. Cons would be the limitation of cutting metal thickness, noisy and generates excess fumes, maintenance costs. It is recommended to use these machines in a ventilated area and must wear PPEs to avoid accidents.

The following product is a hand-cutting plasma machine that can be used in sheet metal cutting especially for welding purposes.

SOLDERING STATIONS

High-tech soldering stations are widely used in professional soldering applications mainly for temperature control rather than using soldering iron only for soldering tasks. The soldering iron cannot control the temperature as it only heats up to a specific temperature.  Through temperature control by a soldering station following advantages can be obtained.

  • To keep solder tip temperature as low as possible to avoid oxidizing before using it for the soldering task.
  • Controlling temperature prevents damage to the components you are soldering. Some electronic components are very heat sensitive. Holding the tip against the lead for long will transfer heat into the semiconductor and cause it to damage.
  • Quick tip heating – With a temperature-controlled tip, you can apply a lot of currents, heating the tip to temperature quickly. Once at temperature, the current is reduced to prevent the tip from overheating which will ruin the tip very quickly.
  • Temperature recovery – When you touch a tip to the metal you want to heat, this removes heat from the tip. The controller will sense this and apply more current to bring the tip back up to the desired temperature.
  • A temperature-controlled tip allows you to leave the tip hot between uses. With a simple uncontrolled iron, the tip will burn up if you leave it for long.

When considering the above you will probably buy a soldering station for your professional applications unless it causes more disadvantages including higher power consumption due to the inability of temperature control.

A high-tech soldering station provides the above-mentioned advantages with ease and a comfortable manner. Apart from that, you will get a digital screen with safe modes, an additional hot air gun for rework, shrink tube applications, and for cleaning the work area after soldering.

As stated earlier, you are the one to choose the perfect soldering station that will suit your capability. You need to consider the wattage, quality, and safety features after choosing the desired unit. Higher wattage means higher power to work for long times. The build quality is also essential for any periodic checks for the maintenance in the manuals. The soldering stations are usually two types ESD safe & non-ESD safe which represent the measurement of electronic discharge when an object with different potential gets close. It is good to have ESD-safe stations as it avoids the forming of static charge on iron and station when soldering applies.

Properly maintained stations can be last for years without replacement. Check whether the high-tech soldering irons come with accessories sets including soldering tips, sets of tweezers, a de-soldering pump, a cleaning sponge, etc. Normally stations come with the above sets but keep in mind to buy the whole pack otherwise you will need to waste money buying individual items separately.

Following high-tech soldering station can be recommended for industrial soldering applications. It covers all the aspects discussed above including wattage, quality, and design standards.

5. SOLDERING STATION

TOP CONVENTIONAL MEASURING INSTRUMENTS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Measuring instruments are of a wide range and types for different measuring purposes. As a professional, you need to know which type is adequately implemented in your applications. Apart from the instrument type, you need to be aware of specific characteristics in each measuring instrument before buying from the market. Let’s look into conventional professional measuring instrument types and how to choose the perfect one for your measuring applications.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4R7GOkJEMb/?utm_medium=copy_link

TOP TIPS ON HOW TO CHOOSE A ‘PERFECT’ ONE

When in an industrial environment, to assure a product is fabricated per your intended design criteria, or to measure the wear or damage extent of a product, you will acquire a professional measuring instrument that will suit your applications. Thus, you will need to consider the following factors listed to choose a perfect measuring tool.

  • Suitability & compatibility
  • Quality & Standard
  • Durability
  • Operation
  • Cost

Suitability & Compatibility

First, you need to identify what you are measuring. Decide the measuring criteria, whether it is linear, angular, thermal or pressure measurement, etc. After figuring out the measuring criteria you need to compare the suitability of the measuring instrument with the measuring item. Check whether you can measure the desired aspect of measuring through the instrument. As an example, you will need a probe to measure the depth of a product or need measuring jaws to measure the diameter of a product. Then check the units of measurement and how far you can measure from the particular measuring tool. You will find similar types of measuring instruments built with different scales and scale ranges for use in different applications. Likewise, review the measuring instrument’s suitability before you are going to buy it.

Quality and Standard

This is the main factor you should focus on buying any product. Do not deceive with price and capability of measuring tool if it is not conformed to industrial standard or desired quality of the design. It is your responsibility to choose the tool that matches your industrial perspective rather than going for a tool for any other industrial applications. Most of the measuring tools are used to measure metallic materials and instances where the effect of the environment is considerable level. In similar cases like that, you will need measurement tools that can withstand these circumstances. It is a wise decision to buy a quality and standardized measuring tool whenever you are buying it for professional applications.

Durability

Durability comes with a good quality of a product. When you buy a measuring tool check whether the tool is capable of using it for a considerable period. Otherwise, you will need to replace time to time and your money is in vain. Some measuring tools need to calibrate in a certain period and you will need to focus on these time frames of maintenance and calibration to keep the tool in a good shape to use in your applications.

Operation

You will wonder, how is the operation affect the measuring tool. It certainly does when you use tools for specific purposes. You need to be aware of instances where a measuring instrument needs to measure a specific factor a product that needs extensive gadgets in the measuring tool. As an example, you will need a caliper with specific jaws designed to measure a welding depth and angle of a product. In such cases do not go for a multi-task tool that can use the same operation. It won’t always give a better reading unless it is a high-quality standardized product. It is highly recommended to buy an instrument that can use only limited desired applications.

Cost

Of course, this is the first factor that anyone will focus on rather than the above-discussed factors. Do not always go for the cheap product as well as vice-versa. Research the range of tools that is available to your budget at first. Then deal with the above factors and choose the perfect one. Not only that do not deceive with the comfort and portability with respect to build quality and durability. As for the author’s recommendation, comfort and handling capability come second when compared to tool quality and durability. So, use your professional mind to choose the desired perfect product without affecting your wallet.

By taking the above into your checklist of buying a measuring tool, you can choose a perfect measuring tool that fits your industrial applications. As per the author’s recommendations following tool types can be used for professional applications. If you need a measuring instrument that suits the following criteria, give it a try.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCREWDRIVERS

As there are dozens of screwdrivers in the market, it is better to know what the common types are. Basically, the type of screwdrivers varies with the fastener head type which is going to tighten or loosen. Identify the following conventional screwdrivers that are used in almost every task related to driving screws.

Phillips Screwdriver/Cross screwdriver

Do you know why this screwdriver got this name? Because it’s designed to screws with Philips heads/cross-shaped recess. Its unique X design grips the screw firmly in the center which copes with higher torsion. This is self-centering. This has five different sizes ranging from zero to four. Be wise to select the correct size, if not it will strip and make it difficult to remove.

Torx or Star Screwdriver

Its design with a crew head with a six-point star-shaped intrusion provides more torque and a secure grip on the fastener head. This can be commonly used in mechanical productions where more torque can be applied.

Torque Screwdrivers

Don’t get confused with Torx. This has a torque-limiting clutch that allows a limit on how much force is applied beyond a certain threshold value. So that inversely tight enough torque can be applied without falling out.

Insulated Screwdrivers

This is ideal when you need to deal with electrical work. These are constructed from non-conductive materials. This can provide you the safety when working in a hazardous environment.

Flathead Screwdriver

The most common type of hand tool. Multi-purpose and can be typically used for a range of applications. This can be used to tighten or loosen screws that have a straight linear notch in their heads.

Tri-Wing Screwdriver

This is mostly used for smaller screws and components. This was originally designed for aerospace engineering. But now commonly used for other general purposes too. For example: Opening mobile phones, computers.

Pozidriv Screwdriver

This is a modified version of the Phillips screwdriver. This has a blunt tip and small ribs among the blade between the main edges which is designed to avoid Cam-out. Also, it provides greater surface contact. This can be differentiated from the Phillips screwdriver from the feature of four notches marked into the head of the Pozidriv screw.

Hex Screwdriver

The unique feature of this is the hexagonal tip which can be used to loosen tighten hex nuts, bolts and screws. Hex screwdrivers are also available in extensive range of both standard and metric sizes.

Square Screwdriver

This is designed for use in furniture manufacturing operations and for other tough materials too. This fits with a square-shaped recess. This has the capability of reducing the cam out issue in slotted screws. Fasten action can be gained. Known as Robertson tip. Five different types of square screwdrivers are available.

Precision Screwdrivers

These screwdrivers can be used for extremely small screw-used devices. For example, mobile phones, watches.

Electric Screwdrivers and Impact Drivers

Electric Screwdrivers are compact power tools that can be used to assemble furniture or screw softwood or other similar materials.  Impact drivers can exert a sudden force that can be used to drive into or remove harder, denser materials.

Apart from general types mentioned above, following types of screwdrivers are also available in some industrial applications.

Triangle Screwdriver

This type is often used with electronics, toys, and appliances. Head is beneficial as it makes it more secure and tamper-proof.  It’s very difficult to remove without a TA screwdriver. Hence can be used for security purposes.

Magnetic Screwdrivers

Screws attracted by the magnetic force. used in the electronic field. The unique feature is, this reduces the risk of accidentally dropping off screws.

Ratchet Screwdrivers

This applies turning force in only one direction. The opposite side is moving freely. Easy to drive because no need to move the bit in and out of the screw head at the end of each turn. Therefore, fast action can be gained.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE ‘PERFECT’ ONE

Why do we choose a perfect screwdriver for affixing/removing fasteners? Let’s clarify it first. If you do not buy or use a perfect driver, it may lead to damage to the screw type which ultimately affects the workmanship.  Not only that sometimes you need a special type of driver to affix or remove the screw from a product. It is a must to decide the perfect screwdriver bit for your screw head. By choosing the right match bit size, you will prevent damaged bits, stripped screws, and spoiled work surfaces. At first, you will need to search online for go to store and ask for the necessary info related to screw gauge corresponding to drive point sizes.

The screw may be in a position in which you need to lengthy screwdriver to affix or remove. For example, long drivers are often used in engine compartments on automobiles. Short drivers come in handy when you need to affix or remove a tight screw. When you need a driver to use it in an open, easily reach screwdriver you need a driver with a moderate length, only use very short or very long drivers if the job cannot be performed otherwise.

There are some Standards that you will get tips on choosing the best driver for your application. For example, ISO 2380-1:2004 will provide necessary technical specifications and test conditions for the screwdrivers and, in the case of hand-operated screwdrivers, specifies the test torque which the blade-to-handle connection shall withstand. Read and get familiar with other standards like ASME B107.600-2016 & NASM85643 if you are looking to buy a screwdriver set for professional use.

Another factor in choosing a perfect screwdriver type is the built quality of the driver. The driver needs to be hard enough to apply force on the screw to affix or remove it. Along with hardness, it will need a certain degree of toughness in it. Try to find a driver with good wear & corrosion resistance which will provide a better shelf life. General materials that are good for manufacturing screwdrivers are Chromium-molybdenum steel (Cr-Mo), chrome vanadium steel (Cr-V), Carbon Steel (CS), S2 tool steel, The above material will perfectly match a multi-function screwdriver that will need the above-mentioned quality. The screwdriver grip is also a good factor to be concerned about.   An insulated fine grip will provide you with a better handling experience and will prevent getting in touch with electricity when affixing /removing screws in areas of avionics and electrical applications.

CONVENTIONAL TOOLS FOR GENERAL SOLDERING APPLICATIONS

Are you often use soldering for bonding electrical connections, plumbing, and metalworks…? Do you aware of specific tools apart from the soldering iron that is widely used in soldering applications, or are you a beginner for soldering. Well, let’s discuss different soldering applications and conventional tools that make your soldering process much easier and smoother than before.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CP2S1-Dr9s4/?utm_medium=copy_link

BRIEF ON THE SOLDERING PROCESS & APPLICATIONS

Metals may be joined by mechanical means (bolting, riveting, etc.) or by welding brazing, soldering, or adhesive bonding. Out of these, Soldering is a process of joining metals by flowing a low melting point alloy termed ‘solder’, between the surfaces that are to be joined.  It is essentially an alloying process in which certain elements in the solder combine with the metals of the joint, and this is only possible if clean metal and clean molten solder are brought into effective contact.

The basic equipment required for normal soldering operations is a ‘Soldering iron’ of a suitable type and a source of heat (these may be combined, as in the electric soldering iron), solder of the correct composition for the job in hand, and a suitable flux-more elaborate equipment is needed for such special applications of the process as sweating and dip soldering, but these types of soldering are not usually encountered in the general workshop. Let’s discuss briefly soldering types widely used.

Following are the general types of soldering applied on different temperature levels.

  • Soft Soldering– General type of soldering used for joining wires and small components. The joining parts of soft soldering are not exposed to higher temperatures (normally ranging between 90-450 degrees) and are not subjected to higher loads and forces. The solder type used in this process has a melting point ranging between 150-350 degrees and is commonly lead or tin. Zinc chloride is the common soldering flux used in soft soldering.
  • Hard Soldering– This type uses a solder that is higher temperature and stronger than those used in soft soldering. This type is also known as silver soldering where silver mixed with tin is utilized as a solder in the process. Brass is also used as a solder for this type and to strengthen the connection a blowtorch is implemented. Normally in this type, solders have a temperature range of 600 – 900 degrees and fluxes are in paste form.
  • Brazing – This type uses metals with a melting point than the above-said soldering types. The process is much similar to hard soldering where the metal being bonded is heated rather than being melted. When both joining metals are heated at a higher temperature the melted solder is placed in between two joining metals.

As solder is used in joining the metals or components in a circuit or metalwork, flux is used to prepare the joining surface to perform the soldering perfectly. It removes any contamination in the metal surface and helps in wetting the molten solder between metals and protects the joints from re-oxidation during soldering.

When performing any of the soldering types described earlier, a proper solder needs to be used. There are some standards to choose the perfect solder type for soldering applications. Some of them are ASTM B579, ASTM B907, ASTM B828 by ASTM international. It is a good practice to adhere to each mentioned standard before you are in to any of the engineering processes.

Proper safety practices need to implement when carrying out a soldering process. The correct type of PPE must be worn to prevent hazards caused by heat. Not only that fumes are released when metals are being heated during the soldering process. So appropriate respirators and goggles, gloves need to use. You can use the following recommended PPE when working on brazing soldering tasks.

https://digitalzakka.com/product/full-face-respirator-gas-mask-goggles-anti-dust-cover-safety-chemical-filter/

Product review – The above respirator is a full-face mask type with a chemical filter and anti-dust cover.  It provides 2 in 1 protection for both eyes and covers the nose as well. It can prevent Can various organic gases, such as formaldehyde, gasoline, ether, suitable for spray paint, oil, machinery, polishing, dust, etc. Can be recommended for use in brazing soldering tasks as a Safety PPE.

Now we have a better understanding of soldering and the types of components used. Let’s discuss the main topic, the conventional tools that are implemented for soldering applications.

CONVENTIONAL SOLDERING TOOLS

The conventional tool types mentioned below are the basic tools that will make your soldering task a perfect one.

  • Soldering Iron
  • Soldering Station (Generally includes conventional Soldering stand, Control unit, and a Sponge)
  • Soldering Iron tips
  • Soldering Hand tools – Scrapers, Tweezers, Holders, Clamps

SOLDERING IRON

Soldering iron is the most essential tool used in the soldering process. A soldering iron consists essentially of a copper “bit” secured to a holder, to which is fitted a heat-resistant handle.  The bit varies in weight, according to the nature of the work for which the iron is intended. Normally for the general workshop, bits of 4 ounces are used and adequate for most purposes, but very small bits may be needed for ultra-light soldering in very confined positions.  The bit is the heat reservoir of the tool, and it must be large enough to heat the job adequately.  If you are buying a soldering iron make sure to check the wattage other than the thickness of the tip.  If the iron has a higher wattage, it will heat up quickly and it helps the tip to maintain the higher temperature throughout the process.

The following types of solder iron are available in the market that is customized according to the power, capability, and type of soldering.

TRADITIONAL SOLDERING IRONS

Traditional soldering irons are easily available in the market and are used in general soldering activities such as soldering electronic components and household usage. Make sure to look for the wattage when buying a traditional one. Normally for soldering electronic components, ideal power would be 25-40W, 40-60W for household use, and industrial usage such as soldering thick wires, sheet metals 100w is needed.

GENERAL PPE TYPES, A WELDER SHOULD BUY …!

Are you a welding technician or a person who often uses welding for any of the general fabrication processes? Are you aware of PPE…? or types of PPE used in a welding process. A professional welder always needs to adhere to safety practices while on the field and should have knowledge of choosing the correct PPE for the relevant welding task. Let’s get familiarized with the general types of PPE widely used in welding purposes.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Burm8ZajW27/?utm_medium=copy_link

BRIEF ON THE WELDING PROCESS.

Welding is one of the extensive fabrication processes in the product manufacturing and construction field where the operator/welder needs to be more aware of personal safety. The process runs mainly using electrical and thermal sources in which proper handling and safety practices need to be utilized to minimize burns, electric shock, damaged vision, and other health issues while working. General types of welding types can be categorized for your understanding as follows.

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)– This is the most popular welding process widely used in the construction and automotive industries. It uses a thin wire which acts as an electrode along with a supply of inert gas as a shield. Welding is accomplished by a constant and direct current poser source that heats up the metals (mainly Steel, Copper, Nickel & Aluminum) to be joined. The main drawbacks of this process are the inability to weld thicker metals and the cost of shielding gas.
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)– This process is widely used in the welding of thin metals and non-ferrous materials in the aviation industry. Uses a fixed non-consumable tungsten electrode with an external gas supply for the welding process. This process needs well-trained personnel as it takes skill and precision to accomplish smooth welding.
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)– This is the general type of welding process that is prevalent in any of the general fabrication processes. This is also known as stick welding which uses a stick-type electrode in it. The quality of the welding is somewhat low when compared to other processes but it is the most cost-effective process in the industry.
  • Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW) – This process replaces the shield welding process. It includes self-shielding agents in a continuous wire which decompose with the wire when welding. It is often used outdoors as it generates smoke and fumes during the process.

Apart from the above-discussed welding types, some other processes like Laser Beam, Electron Beam, Plasma Arc, Atomic Hydrogen Welding are prevailing in the construction and manufacturing fields. For each process, the operator or welder must use proper PPE adhering to the safety standards and recommended practices.

WHAT IS PPE & WHY “PPE” IS NECESSARY?

If you are using welding for any fabrication process, you should be aware of the word “PPE”. PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment which are the items that any person involved in hazardous fabrication processes need to be equipped with.  It is not only for the engineering industry but also used in other industries to minimize exposure to hazards for working personnel. There are some standards that have been put to address the proper use of PPE and its design aspects. Some of them are ANSI/ISEA 15-2014 (American National Standards Institute), OHSA 1910 Subpart I (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards. These standards have categorized the PPE for general requirement, for the head, foot, eye, and face protection, and have addressed the following aspects too.

  • The design of PPE– The design should be ergonomic and shall be of safe design for the work to be followed.
  • The hazard or conformity assessment – Conform to product standards based on hazard category, along with conducting approved test methods and certifying the PPEfor industrial usage.
  • The proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the PPE.
  • Specific training – How to use PPEfor general and industrial processes.

The above standards are compiled to minimize the damage caused to each person working in a hazardous environment. If you are a welding engineer or technician you must conform to the above standards and safety practices when welding. For general practices, it is good to adhere to the aspects of the above standards so you can choose a better PPE for your welding process.

GENERAL TYPES OF PPE FOR WELDING

Personnel safety can be highly ensured with the appropriate use of PPE in the welding field. Some general types of PPE that can be used in the field of welding are Safety goggles, Safety gloves, Helmets, Fire/Flame resistant aprons, Welding boots, Earplugs, and respirators.

Normally if you are working in a manufacturing or construction organization, you will have proper training on how to you these PPE in the working environment. It is a good practice to locate your PPE for the welding process in a separate area and depict the wording and illustrations representing proper handling and usage in the workshop environment.

Let’s look into a few of the most essential PPEs found in the market that can be used in your day-to-day welding purposes and also for industrial usage.

SAFETY GLOVES

Wearing safety gloves is the first-line defense for hands. It can protect you from cuts, scratches, heat, electric shocks, and fires. If you are a professional welder, you must wear flame-resistant and insulating gloves according to the ANSI Z49.1, BS EN 12477 standards per your organization’s guidance. Generally, gloves are fabricated per type of welding which is been used. The thread type, fit, and linings will vary in accordance with the type. For example, bigger heavily padded gloves are used in MIG welding. Normally these are built by using cowhide split-grain leather with flame retardant lining to achieve a durable product. For TIG welding, gloves are much smaller with thinner padding and very flexible as heat resistance is not an important factor. A glove for stick welding ideally an extreme heat resistance one with top grade leather and cotton linear.

Here are some recommended safety gloves, arm sleeves in the market that can be used for general welding purposes.

It is always wise to use leather aprons due to their resistance and flexibility. It can easily protect you from high-temperature products, radiation, flying molten metals, hot slag, sparks, intense heat, chemical burns produced during welding. No doubt that Leather protects better than most materials. But make sure that the apron will fit and be comfortable for handling welding applications. It is a wise decision to choose a full apron rather than half covered. Use of aprons made up of Clothing made of polyester, acetate, or acrylic with cotton blend should be avoided as these materials catch flames and get ignited easily. Cowhide, Pigskin, leather, and flame retardant aprons are recommended types that can be used in welding applications.

TOP 5 CONVENTIONAL TOOLS FOR AN ELECTRICAL / AVIONICS WIRING INTERCONNECTION REPAIR

Repairs related to electrical systems including electrical wirings should possess a higher workmanship. While adhering to standards and recommended practices, you will also need to focus on the perfect tool for repair accomplishment as well. As an electrician or technician, it is a good practice to use the perfect tool for the specific repair task. So, it is better to check below mentioned tools are already in your workshop tool checklist.

BREIF ON ELECTRICAL /AVIONICS WIRING INTERCONNECTION SYSTEM & RELATED REPAIRS

Generally Electrical Interconnection System (ELS) is an integral part of electrical system of an aircraft or a product with a wiring system with components. This term is used frequently used as ‘EWIS’ – Electrical Wiring Interconnection System in aviation industry focusing wires and the wiring of systems in aircraft. The wiring system of component or a system is a major concern as well as the repair or maintenance practices. It may be sound simple, but this system has a severe damage on overall reliability or safety operation of the product under failure conditions. Many of aviation related incidents had reported during last decade due to failure of electrical wiring causing fatal accidents. Thus, major regulation authorities like FAA, EASA have set up EWIS related safety practices to mitigate the failures during aircraft operation. The wire degradation is the main reason for the failure of Electrical Interconnection System. The degradation deals with physical properties of the wire, insulation of wire or wire bundle, maintenance, and the environment. Aging is also affecting to the degradation, and it will depend on the type of wires installing.

Apart from inadvertent indirect damages due to failure of structure or product, the wiring systems tend to degrade with time and the causes for wire degradation due to environment would be heat, moisture, chemical contamination, poor installation, and maintenance. Exposing to high heat area will cause insulation dryness and cracking in wiring system. In aircraft especially at engines, galleys and in lighting systems this degradation will prone to cause. Most of insulation material is a very complex long chain polymer in which moisture affect the changes to this polymer decreasing the insulation qualities over time. This will not cause only for the insulation, but also high moisture areas generally prone to corrosion of terminals, pins, sockets and conductors. It should note that wiring installation provisions must be free from moisture with a moderate temperature condition. The poor maintenance and the installation are another cause that can be categorized as a human error. Always need to comply with minimum standards applied to each field and OEM recommendations whenever conducting an installation or maintenance work. The vibration will also cause for wire aging especially in aircraft where vibration levels are not at constant rate throughout the frames.

In order to follow repair and maintenance procedures in an aircraft wiring system or any product in engineering industry the appropriate tool selection is necessary.

CONVENTIONAL TOOL TYPES

STRIPPING OF WIRES

The repair procedure of wiring system includes stripping of wires. This is the initial stage of repair where wires are prepared to assemble into connectors, terminals, and splices. There are some safety practices that need to follow to achieve a perfect repair.

  • When using wire stripper, hold the wire perpendicular to the cutting blades of wire stripper.
  • Proper use of automatic stripping tools. Always adhere to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) instructions.
  • Use stripping blades appropriate to the insulation thickness.
  • Make sure that insulation cut cleanly with no frayed or ragged edges.
  • Make sure all insulation is removed from the stripped area. Some wire types are supplied with a transparent layer of insulation between the conductor and the primary insulation which can be missed.
  • If required, re-twist strands to restore natural lay and tightness.

Keep in mind that the stripping plier jaws are in good condition and appropriate for the wire. Manual insulation stripping with cutting tools is limited to followings.

  • Cable cross section above 5mm²or wire gauge 10.
  • Fire resistant cable insulation
  • Screened cables (braided or helical screening)
  • Coaxial cables

Wire strippers using should be able use under above instances and strippers should allow stripping wire smoothly with a minimum pressure applying on it. Most of the strippers used in aviation industry are qualified with SAE standards and poor-quality wire strippers or mismatched blades can compromise the performance of wiring. A wire stripper must clearly mark the applicable wire size per blades and a cushioned plastic grip with spring action mechanical design would probably ideal stripper specification to implemented in a repair. A lightweight stripper made from die-cast zinc; carbon steel materials make easy to accomplish the tasks with high productivity. Along with strippers some accessories are used to make stripping much easier. They are gripper pads, wire stop, short stop latches which are customized per stripper configuration.

CRIMPING OF WIRES

Crimping is another process in wire interconnections which is to join wire to wire or wire to terminal. At the wire junction bonding of wires accomplished by metal compressed and deformed tightly over one another. The crimping tool is used to perform above process and crimping tool type is varied per the function such as,

  • End cap crimp tool used to crimp the spare wire end caps.
  • Close end splice crimp tool used to crimp close end splices.
  • T – Head crimping tool & Hand crimping tool used to crimp pre-insulated diamond grip (PIDG) terminals and moisture proof splices.
  • Modular crimping tool used to crimp contacts for modular terminal blocks.
  • Connector contact crimping tools used to crimp standard contacts. A locator in crimp tool used to position the contact in the correct position for crimp.

As of above different practices, the crimping tool type may vary, but need to keep in mind that type of crimp tool you are using is capable of performing the intended function as no damages will be present post-crimping process. So proper knowledge on tool selection is necessary and pre crimping checks need to be performed to make sure that the crimp tool parts are free from damages, corrosion, and wear. As per aviation regulations and manuals these variety of crimp tool types are inspected periodically after 1000 or 2000 crimps. A GO/NO-GO gauge is used to check the condition of crimping tools. It is always best practice to check the labeling of each crimp tool type mentioning the wire type, gauge, part number and manufacturer, die number if applicable.

Here are few types of crimping tools that widely used in Industrial applications of crimping processes.

To sustain the mechanical properties in a sheet metal fabricated product, better workmanship is necessary. To achieve a quality product, you should utilize the right set of tools in your hand. The correct set of tools will provide you to achieve desired quality product out of sheet metals. So, Let’s dig into industrial tool types that are prominently used in sheet metal construction and repair.

CONVENTIONAL TOOL TYPES IN SHEET METAL CONSTRUCTION & REPAIR

Sheet metals are mainly used as a high-strength outer covering of a product. To form required shape and design criteria, different types of tools are needed at different stages in fabricating or repairing a sheet metal product. Identify some of the tool types below when you start each fabricating step in the construction or repair process.

  • Layout tools
  • Marking tools
  • Cutting tools
  • Forming and Drilling tools

Each tool type is separated per the process sequence. Let’s discuss above each tool type and perfect tools for each type that can find in the industrial market.

LAYOUT TOOLS

When you fabricate desired design or repair a part, at first, you need to sketch/mark the layout in the sheet metal type or a part. To do that, the following specific tools can be implemented.

  • Scales
  • Combination square
  • Dividers

SCALES

Scales are available in various lengths and units. For the construction and fabrication of sheet metals, you need to purchase a scale of at least a 12-inch-long ruler which is more common and affordable. The decimal and fractional units on either side are very useful as some of dimensions need to mark or measure in fractions such as fastener length, diameter and metal thickness.

COMBINATION SQUARE

This tool consists of a steel ruler with three heads that can be moved to any position on the ruler and locked in place. The three heads respectively are a stock head that measures 90° and 45° angles, a protractor head that can measure any angle between the head and the blade, and a center head that uses one side of the blade as the bisector of a 90° angle. The center of a shaft can be found by using the center head. This is a perfect replacement for a general ruler and is commonly used in sheet metal constructions. The above scale can be recommended as an engineering layout tool. The overall length is above 12 inches and both fractional and decimal units are included and angular measurement is given by a digital protector.

https://digitalzakka.com/product/3-in-1-multi-combination-adjustable-ruler/

By considering the aforementioned criteria the above tool type can be recommended for use in sheet metal design constructions and repairs.

DIVIDERS

The dividers can be used to transfer measurement from a product to a layout in which construction is carried out. This tool can also be used as a marking tool in sheet metal construction and repairs. The below tool is made up of medium Carbon Steel and flat divider legs with a sharp end that provides the best measuring experience with easy handling.

The tip of the above scribe is made up of tungsten steel. This tool can be used for marking hard materials such as hardened steel and stainless steel, ceramic, and glasses. Sharp tips and easy handling design will make your marking process much faster.

The center punches shown below are recommended to use when carrying out a repair or installation via fasteners. The punch is made up of carbon steel and the rear end is attached with spring enabling it to apply force easily and repetitively on the required marking points.

CUTTING TOOLS

Sheet metal cutting tools are categorized as powered and non-powered and tools are ranging from small size portable saw, nibblers, grinders to large shop tools like square shears and band saws. The portable cutting tools become handy when dealing with small repairs and parts fabrications. Some of the prominent types of portable cutting tools are,

  • Nibbler
  • Cut-off wheel
  • Hand cutting tools (straight snips, files)

Nibblers are mostly used for cutting different extensive shapes out of sheet metals. They are usually powered by compressed air and utilize high-speed blanking action to cut the metal. The cutting speed of the nibbler is controlled by the thickness of the sheet metal. Nibblers satisfactorily cut through sheets of metal with a maximum thickness of 1⁄16 inch. Too much force applied to the metal during the cutting.

The above grinding accessories are recommended for general sheet metal cutting purposes. It can use for cutting mild/black steel, stainless steel, and other sheet metals. Includes necessary accessories like flange nuts, connecting shanks, and wrenches that can easily mount on grinders.

Hand-cutting tools are tool types that do not use electric or battery power for cutting. These tools are used for sharpening ends, cutting edges of light gauge sheet metals. There are conventional straight snips that are cost-effective and use in general sheet metal cutting purposes.

The mallets or hammers are used to form sheet metals by deforming the sheet metal structures over repetitive blows onto the surface without marring or indenting the metal. The hammerhead is usually made of high carbon, heat-treated steel, while the head of the mallet, which is usually larger than that of the hammer, is made of rubber, plastic, wood, or leather.

In metal workshops drilling metals most conventional tool is pneumatic drilling gun. It is more effective as it is powered by compressed air. But for general small-scale repair or design constructions portable drilling guns can be used. They are more cost-effective, and comfortable in small-scale production processes.

FINAL DISCUSSION

Tools discussed above are some of the conventional tool types that can be recommended for general sheet metal design constructions and repairs. It is the technician or the operator’s responsibility to choose the correct tool type for the required fabrication process. The operation of these tools is not extensive but one needs to have a proper understanding of these before implementing them. Always follow the correct general techniques of each tool discussed. Keep in mind that a quality of a product always depends on the workmanship and the correct type of tool handling apart from the material suitability.

MARKING TOOLS

Marking tools are used to mark the desired design on the sheet metal or the damaged product that needs to be repaired. The most common marking tool in sheet metal construction is scribes. A scribe is a pointed instrument used to mark or score metal to show where it is to be cut. A scribe should only be used when marks will be removed by drilling or cutting because it makes scratches that weaken the material and could cause corrosion. Other than scribes, Punches and Fiber-tipped pens are the preferred tools of marking lines and hole locations. Following scribes can be recommended for your repair or construction using sheet metals.

The above scribe is the most common type of craft tool used for marking metals. Stainless steel stem will provide high wear resistance and the fine grip helps to grab the scribe comfortably.

Punches are also categorized as a marking tool but these can be used to drive bolts out of holes, loosen frozen or tight pins and keys, knock out rivets, pierce holes in a material. There are a few punches like center punch, pin punch, drive punch, transfer punch fabricated per the each of above-mentioned functions.

Installation of most sheet metal constructions or repairs is accomplished via attaching fasteners. The fastener type, no of fastener, and the diameter depending on the sheet metal design and the thickness. When repairing, the fastener map is essential, cause the distribution of fasteners in the required repair will affect the repair strength. If the fastener map is distributed unequally the whole repair won’t achieve the result you have expected. So, to plot the well-distributed fastener layout in a sheet metal you will need to mark the required layout on the sheet before starting drilling. To do so, center punches can be used as a perfect tool for marking fastener locations ideal for your repair.

operation clogs the dies (shaped metal), causing them to fail or the motor to overheat. So, need to practice before operating these tools. Both electric and hand nibblers are available in the market. Refer to the below conventional nibbler cutting tool holder that can implement with any electric drill.

This nibbler cutter attachment can cut to a maximum of 2mm thickness of sheet metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, steel & copper. Included a double cutting head with a plastic handle which enables easy cutting to desired direction and angle.

CUT-OFF WHEEL

The cut-off wheel is a thin abrasive disc driven by a high-speed pneumatic die-grinder and used to cut out damage sheets in metal structures. Most suitable for repairing small sheet metal parts. They come up with different cutting disc sizes for each appliance. Cutting discs with grinding accessories can be separately purchased from the market and are available to fit in specific die grinders that suit your application.

FORMING & DRILLING TOOLS

The most conventional forming, drilling tools are found in metal workshops and are heavy in size to form large-scale sheet metal structures. But if you need to form and drill a small sheet metal part to repair damage to a structure, the following tool types are the best choice.

The above portable drill enables flat drill function with a good ergonomic handle design. Include a safe locking and support forward and reverse driving. The specification mentioned in the above tool can be recommended for general purpose sheet metal design construction and repairs.

The portable drills can be used as a rivet gun by attaching a riveting tool adapter to them. The attachment comes with a handle that makes the riveting process much easier and faster. Most probably these are cost-effective when compared to traditional revert guns and drills. Ideal these attachments for general use for sheet metal repair and design construction.

When it comes to getting professional-looking vlogs, most people these days will simply use the amazing camera on their phones. Almost everyone in today’s world has a smartphone, and these generally come with cameras that have excellent video quality. But while this is a cheap and easy solution to start to create your own vlogs, how can you take them to the next level? Getting your hands on a simple vlogging kit can quickly take an average vlog to an amazing one with a few simple pieces of equipment!

Take the KIT-01LM Vlogging kit for example. This handy little kit comes with everything that you will need in order to start vlogging with your phone and will really help to step up the quality. You can find this amazing vlog kit at

A lot of people make vlogs, but very few will actually take the time to set up their phone with a few simple pieces of gear in a vlogging kit that will take their videos to the next level. Let’s take a deeper dive into the three basic components that any good phone vlogging kit should come with, and how they can help you create one-of-a-kind masterpieces every time you vlog with your very own smartphone!

Tripod

First and foremost, you need a tripod to hold your phone or camera when vlogging. While smartphones can take some amazing videos, they usually can’t stand up on their own. This is where the tripod comes in, and will allow you to take many more different types of videos instead of solely handheld shots. The tripod is also essential to keeping your shot level and stable when you aren’t there to hold it. This particular vlogging kit of course includes a quality tripod that is the perfect size to take on the go. It is also flexible, meaning that it can get you 360 degrees of unobstructed shots. It is also compatible with other cameras and go pros should you need to use it for anything else! A nice feature that is included is its ability to sit with three legs, or simply fold all of them together to switch the tripod to an “on the go” mode where you can use it handheld for more variety!

Light

The next essential kit piece is a quality light. This is important, as you can not always rely on the natural lighting in many settings to be sufficient enough. With a good light that is situated with your camera or phone, you will be able to come across clearly and properly lit in all of your vlogs. The last thing that you want to happen is to take a lot of time and effort to record your vlogs, only to review them later and realize that they are super dark. One of the best types of lights that you can get for this purpose are LED lights. These lights will not only be brighter and of higher quality, but they will last you much longer.

With this kit, you will get a light that includes an array of 36 different LED lights that will give you plenty of illumination even in the darkest settings. This light can mount to the shoe-mount of almost all video cameras and DSLRs, but can also attach to the smartphone holder that is also included inside of this kit!

Microphone

Easily one of the most important aspects of quality vlogs, the microphone will ensure that you have good sound in your videos. Many experts agree that sound is the most important aspect of a video, even more, important than video quality. If the sound is not good, viewers simply will not watch it while they will tolerate other things like subpar video quality. With how important sound is, it is extremely vital that you get yourself a good microphone so that your voice is heard clearly and loudly in your vlogs. This microphone can plug directly into your phone, allowing the video and sound to sync flawlessly which means less editing for you later on.

Remote

A handy extra that you can find included in this kit is a simple remote that will help you to activate your phone without you having to do it yourself. This will allow you to get set up and simply hit a button to start recording, making your vlogs even easier to film and ensuring that they are even higher in quality. Not every vlog kit will include something like this, so the fact that the KIT-01LM vlogging kit means that you are getting even more value for the price you are paying! This remote will connect to your phone with Bluetooth, and has a long range of around 30 feet. It is extremely small and handy, and will easily slip into your pocket where you will not even notice it until you need it for your next video!

Phone Holder

Last but not least, you have another piece of gear that is not usually included in vlogging kits and that is a phone holder. This is the central piece that will connect to your tripod and securely hold your phone. It will also serve as a mount for the other equipment such as the microphone and LED light. With everything put together and your phone held in place, you can hit record on your remote and start to film all of your vlogs!

Final Thoughts Vlogging has become increasingly popular over the years, and more and more creators are turning to their smartphones in order to easily film their vlogs. But while your smartphone can take some amazing videos, a simple vlogging kit like this one can instantly take your average videos and make them great. This vlogging kit will come with everything that you will need in order to either start vlogging on your phone or to improve the overall quality of your vlogs going forward. If you have ever considered trying out a kit like this, you will not want to miss out on the KIT-01LM Vlogging Kit! You can pick one up for yourself by going to
