The A4988 is a comprehensive micro-stepping motor driver equipped with a built-in translator that simplifies operation. This driver supports full, half, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 step modes of bipolar stepper motors and maintains an output drive capacity of up to 35V, and ± 2A.
The A4988 motor driver employs a fixed off-time current regulator operable in slow or mixed decay modes. The unique A4988 converter is a key feature, allowing a single pulse to advance the motor one micro-step without the need for complex phase queue tables, high-frequency control lines, or programming. Ideal for situations where a complex microprocessor is unavailable or overwhelmed.
In micro-step operation, the A4988’s internal chopping control automatically switches to the optimal current decay mode (either slow or mixed). For mixed decay modes, the device starts with a fixed downtime in fast decay before transitioning to slow decay downtime for the remaining duration. This mixed decay current control scheme helps reduce audible motor noise, increase step accuracy, and reduce power consumption.
Internal circuits include synchronous rectification control circuitry to enhance power consumption during pulse-width modulation (PWM) operations. Additional internal circuit protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and crossover-current protection. The unique power sequencing is another notable feature. Lastly, it includes a heatsink within the set.
