Understanding ESR of a capacitor
The ESR of a capacitor refers to the series resistor housed within a capacitor. We use 100kHz to eliminate the impedance 1/(2piF*C). What follows is a reduction in impedance and then we’re enabled to measure the true series resistor’s value. When an E-capacitor is found to have a higher ESR, it creates a large ripple as opposed to filtering noise. Generally, a large E-capacitor has more than 3 ohms.
Leveraging this concept, we’re able to determine if a capacitor is in good condition or if it’s bad/damaged. Because the ESR meter we use only applies less than 15mV DC or peak to peak on a ‘good’ capacitor, this tool can be used for in-circuit testing. The testing voltage is so low that it won’t turn on the semiconductors in a circuit under testing.
In cases of repairing a TV, an LCD, an Audio board and similar equipment, in-circuit testing will allow us to determine if a capacitor is functioning optimally or not.
